The Underlying Process of SoulCollage
We are all immersed in a greater, universal unconscious and are far more than our local, personal selves. We are conditioned to identify with our seemingly separate and discrete egos. This ego-identity is both true and a lie – it is a version of who we are and how we function, but oh how far it is from the whole truth! When we free/open ourselves from this constricted identity through imaginal play, we feel, intuit, know and ARE enormously connected, empowered and wise beyond our ordinary selves. We tap into the interconnectedness of all beings and things. We invite ourselves into the realm of Soul.
Images are doorways into being and knowing at the level of Soul. External images come to us through our visual faculties; internal images through our dreams, fantasies and imagination. We swim in images daily, hourly, moment by moment. Yet we often reduce our reality to what we think. Sacred work with images provides doorways to reconnect with the delightful, capricious, and multifaceted flow of our rich and soulful human experience. We ourselves are imaginal presences, always in soulful relationship with all that is around us.
Images, like myths, are much bigger containers than our literal stories. In interacting with, feeling and speaking through images, we are unleashed from the constricted, literal story of our ego in its skin-bound locality. Obviously, there are other ways to connect with soul, with spirit, with the greater source of our being. Sacred work with images is just one way to open up to our more expansive and inclusive selves, to our multiple and multidimensional selves.
Imagination has far greater and more complex reach than rational thinking. Some might say that imagination is the ground of true human intelligence. It certainly is the ground of our spiritual intelligence. Through our imagination we tap into that place where everything is interconnected and everything is alive. By imagining, we actively engage and co-create our being and knowing rather than remaining limited to the passive Cartesian model (Cogito ergo sum - I think therefore I am). We entertain. We mess around. We play. Play is at the heart of our human endowment.
SoulCollage is a practice of accessing and mobilizing “invisibles” through meditating, playing and dialoguing with images. We are like worms wiggling our way down into delicious and nutritious dirt. As imaginally engaged humans we wiggle our way into fertile soul realms where we are recollected, reenlivened, rejuvenated and then spit back out into the everyday world, renewed. We play in the symbolic realm to regain our sense of deep belonging. We give hospitality and substance to what otherwise remains invisible. We create spiritual and psychological space for ourselves in the world. We come to take our place.
The Actual Process of SoulCollage®
The actual process of SoulCollage is simple! We look through magazines and books and respond to images, ripping out and cutting up what calls to us, wrangling, corralling and meditating on what we have chosen, and ultimately gluing images on pieces of cardboard. How’s that for piece-of-cake?! We bypass the left brain and bask in intuitive sensibility and play. We make cards that mysteriously bring to life aspects of who we are. We meet our Selves at the level of Soul. Just let yourself respond to the images. Play with them! Move them around as long as you need until you hear or feel that “kerchunk” inside that says it is just so; time to glue.
During workshops we meet, get grounded, travel in our imagination through guided visualization, work with images, make cards, find voices for our cards, and collaborate in intuitive soul readings. Basically, WE PLAY. There is no right or wrong; there is just a lot of engaged and meaningful fun. Do you want to shuck your uptight, adult self and find your inner kid again, the unfettered you before all of your neurotic worries and baggage? Come and play in the realm of soul. You won’t believe how nourishing and refreshing it is.
I am one trained in SoulCollage among many. (Visit soulcollege.com to find other facilitators.) Examples of my cards can be found in the Image Gallery. Other folks' cards are available at www.soulcollege.com. Please see below for upcoming workshops or email me at drshellyeyre@gmail.com.
To all of those whose images inspire and nurture us: With immeasurable gratitude I honor and thank all of the artists whose creative work in some form or another makes up SoulCollage work. I acknowledge that without you our creative play and work would not be possible. I pray that our SoulCollage practice serves to further enliven, unfold and extend your original work. Thank you too, all the models, subjects, objects, and various manifestations of being who embody the images. May we all continue to creatively and harmoniously tend soul on Earth.
SoulCollage cards are made for personal use only. They are not to be sold, traded, or bartered. SoulCollage is a trademarked process created by Seena Frost. For more information, please visit her website at www.soulcollage.com.
